  • While we read "The Scarlet Ibis," we'll practice good questioning techniques. As you have a question, please post it to this blog. When another finds the answer to the question or has a follow-up question, or an idea that relates to the question, he/she will post those thoughts.
  • Please use the handout from the webpage to guide your thinking.
  • Be respectful and specific on this blog--use predictions, background knowledge, and inferences to come to your conclusions.
  • Link your ideas back to the text.

  6. The Scarlet Ibis (Eudocimus ruber) is a species of ibis that inhabits tropical South America and also Trinidad and Tobago. It is the national bird of Trinidad and is featured on the Trinidad and Tobago coat of arms along with Tobago's national bird, the Rufous-vented Chachalaca.
Adults are 56–61 cm long and weigh 650g. They are completely scarlet, except for black wing-tips. They nest in trees, laying two to four eggs. Their diet is fish, frogs, reptiles and crustaceans. A juvenile Scarlet Ibis is grey and white; as it grows the ingestion of red crabs in the tropical swamps gradually produces the characteristic scarlet plumage.
The life span of Scarlet Ibis is approximately 15 years in the wild and 20 years in captivity.
This species is very closely related to the American White Ibis and is sometimes considered conspecific with it.
While the species may have occurred as a natural vagrant in southern Florida in the late 1800s, all recent reports of the species in North America have been of introduced or escaped birds. Eggs from Trinidad were placed in White Ibis nests in Hialeah Park in 1962, and the resulting population hybridised with the native ibis, producing "pink ibises" that are still occasionally seen.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Great background, Earl. Make sure you cite your source.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yes, Angie. A ibis can be white, too, I believe.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Ibis are a group of long-legged wading birds in the family Threskiornithidae. They all have long down curved bills, and usually feed as a group, probing mud for food items, usually crustaceans. Most species nest in trees, often with spoonbills or herons. The word ibis comes from Greek, originally borrowed from Ancient Egyptian hîb and also followed from the root hb.

  17. These words make kind of a scary mood for the story.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Does anyone know exactly whats wrong with Doodle?

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think we can make inferences, Devin, as we read further.
Angie, good question about things being dead. Do you think that the death might relate to Doodle in any way?

    ReplyDelete
  20. What does it mean that he was born in a caul?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Was the tree realy bleeding. So does this mean someone got killed against the tree and the blood was on the tree from the person. Maybe the book is a mystery?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Guys, you might want to go back to the background information on pp. 45 to help you with the bleeding tree, the time period, and see the definitions at the bottom of the page to answer some of your questions.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think that people have small expectations for Doodle.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Not that much is expected of Doodle

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think that doodle is already dead

    ReplyDelete
  49. because they thought that killing him was the best option for him instead of suffering.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Maybe Doodle was meant to do something big in his life, like something that would change the lives of others.

    ReplyDelete
  51. since doodle couldn't walk at age 5, why was his brother so embarrassed.

    ReplyDelete
  52. mabye they want to kill doodle because he might become a powerful king of narnia?

    ReplyDelete
  53. why does the aunt disagree with changing the name and why does she think that he is a saint

    ReplyDelete
  54. because she doesnt want to change who he is just because of what people judge of him.

    ReplyDelete
  55. why would he want to marry his dad

    ReplyDelete
  56. I think that Doodle might like end up dying and then like is soul or whatever like goes into the Scarlet ibis's body or something like that. or maybe he finds a scarlet ibis and it becomes his only friend.

    ReplyDelete
  57. The aunt thinks he is blessed by God because of the way he was born; therefore, she believes he will survive. He has a special purpose.

  59. when they find the dead scarlet ibis why does it put Doodle in such a bad mood after he buries it?

    ReplyDelete
  60. i think they want to kill doodle because walk

    ReplyDelete
  61. Two things:
    1. Karrie, we don't know Doodle's brother's name. I think that might be important.
    2. Connor, I think the fact that Doodle thinks his brother should marry his dad is just a sign of his naivete and innocence.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Why did Doodle tell his mom, dad, and aunt Nicey that his brother taught him how to walk

    ReplyDelete
  63. why does Doodle do everything backwards?

    ReplyDelete

  70. why would the boys not want to tell their parents that doodle was learning to walk?

    ReplyDelete
  71. Megan, it does seem that Doodle's brother is a grown man who is telling this story about his childhood. See the first page. Your predictions could prove true.

    ReplyDelete
  72. The bird must of flown a long way to die in their yard

    ReplyDelete
  73. is the brother wanting to help doodle out of the love in his heart or the selfishness that he has for him to want to play

    ReplyDelete
  74. Because I think the parents would be very concerned with what they are trying to do.

    ReplyDelete
  75. the mood of this story seems really really sad

    ReplyDelete
  76. Why was that text edited out of the story on the bottom of pg. 47 first column?

    ReplyDelete
  77. What is Dix Hill and why would Doodle and his brother be sent there if people stoped to listen to them

    ReplyDelete
  78. I think that the bigger brother expects too highly of Doodle. Doodle is a crippled little boy, and if he doesn't care about what people at school think of him then why should his bigger brother care? Especially because Doodle looks up to his bigger brother, I think he should set a good example for Doodle.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I think doodle is the peoples loved scarlet ibis

    ReplyDelete
  80. the mood of the story is very depressing

    ReplyDelete
  81. when doodle is all bloody and dying in the end he is red like the scarlet ibis

    ReplyDelete
  82. Yes; the bird is rare and has come from far away; what similarities do you see between the bird and Doodle?

    ReplyDelete
  83. Well i think the brother just wants to try to get the best for Doodle.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I wondered the same thing about Dix Hill; it seems that it's probably a sanatorium or a mental hospital.

    Cody and Devin, good connections.

    ReplyDelete
  85. are they still going to kill doodle even though hes learning to walk?

    ReplyDelete
  86. TKELLN great question!!!!!!!!!;) I believe the boys dont want to tell the parents because they may think they are pressuring him into something that is vertually impossible for him

    ReplyDelete
  87. Do we know what Doodle's disability is yet?

    ReplyDelete
  88. I think that doodle is going to get hurt by learning all the things over summer

    ReplyDelete
  89. The bigger brother must feel awful...

    ReplyDelete
  90. I really really want to know what happens to Doodle in the end of the story its very thought provoking

  95. The mood of the story seems to be getting sadder

    ReplyDelete
  96. I think Doodle's brother is pushing him to hard, he can only do so much. Is something bad going to happen to Doodle?

    ReplyDelete
  97. I know that summer is gone
I want to know more why doodle has skin like a old person
I don't understand at all what type of disease doodle has

    ReplyDelete
  98. Do you think doodle will be able to walk? I think he will be able to

    ReplyDelete
  99. What ideas do you all have about the symbolism of the ibis?
Also, Elena, a question from a long time ago--the edited text made the story especially long and even more disturbing, so these compilers decided to edited it out.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I wonder why they are not telling their parents they are teaching Doodle to walk??

    ReplyDelete
  101. Matt, I think Doodle may have cerebal palsy which would make him look older than he is and would have killed most children early on.

    ReplyDelete
  102. What kind of name is doodle anyways something like greg would be more appropriate

    ReplyDelete
  103. Can you tell us the edited text????

    ReplyDelete
  104. I think Doodle might be able to walk for a little while then he will not be able to.

    ReplyDelete
  105. What will be the reaction of Doodle's parents when finding out he can walk, swim, run, climb trees, and even fight?

    ReplyDelete
  106. i think the Ibis represents Doodle, how they both has problems and were different then the other birds/kids.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Karrie, good ideas about mood.
Scott, how thought provoking. SO glad you spend time thinking about English.
Nich and Cameron--like the predictions you all are making.
About Doodle's sadness over the Ibis--remember that the ibis is rare. They may have never seen one before.

    ReplyDelete
  108. You should never leave someone behind if they have fallen

    ReplyDelete
  109. The brother most likely hates himself now....
I never want to find a dead scarley ibis EVER.

    ReplyDelete
  110. I don't think that Doodle should be doing all these things at once, walking is even to much for him.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Bianca, it's a type of plant in the South.
Megan, like that thinking. Keep going.
Greg might have been more appropriate, but it's not very southern or nicknameish.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Why did Doodle have a feverish look and nightmares all of a sudden? What are the nightmares about?

    ReplyDelete
  113. Maggie, good inference. And, Cameron, I think Maggie's ideas would help you answer your question. They don't want to tell their parents because all the exertion could hurt Doodle, since he has a weak heart.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Do you think now that doodle can walk he will ba able to learn to run and then keep gaining more skills?

    ReplyDelete
  115. maybe Doodle will die like the bird

    ReplyDelete
  116. what happened to doodle to make him so messed up?

    ReplyDelete
  117. This is just like the Killing of a Mocking bird because someone in the story ends up being like the bird in some way

    ReplyDelete
  118. Zrunberg thats a great question but disabled people can only learn so much Doodle should take it one at a time. Hope this helped!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

    ReplyDelete
  119. I think the birds death could be a spot of symbolysm somewhere in the book.

    ReplyDelete
  120. why was the painted picture of the brothers as old men and doodle in a go cart, help motivate doodle so much?

    ReplyDelete
  121. near the bottom of page 49, it mentions something about a rain fog, what on earth is this?

    ReplyDelete
  122. i think the brother killed doodle in a way by leaving him to die.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Brendan and Chandler, good connections. Earl, see my post earlier--I think Doodle probably had cerebal palsy.
    Connor, good inference.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Karl, fog that hangs on after a rain--more like mist.

    ReplyDelete
  125. I think it's wrong that Doodle's brother was ashamed that Doodle was crippled and couldn't walk. Doodle's brother was the one that made him walk.

    ReplyDelete
  126. We don't ever learn the brother's name, Sharon. Do you think that's important? Nich, great prediction.

    ReplyDelete
  127. I think Doodle will die from being overworked

    ReplyDelete
  128. Is the Brother pushing Doodle to hard? Is he making him worse than better?

    ReplyDelete
  129. does the bird relate to the main character

    ReplyDelete
  130. i think that having doodle do all this until he collapses and cries isnt good for him and will end up bad in the end instead of making him a fun brother who he can play sports with

    ReplyDelete
  131. why was the brother so sad in the end? I thought he wanted Doodle to die...in the beginning?
Did he end up wanting him to stay alive sense he kept making progress?

    ReplyDelete
  132. how old are the boys in this story?

    ReplyDelete
  133. i cant imagine how the brother must feel...

    ReplyDelete
  134. I think doodle is weak like the ibis he is "lost " like the ibis far from where he should be and survived till a given point. The ibis and doodle were red and their legs were weak. I think doodle was sad because he could feel and relate Exactly towards the Scarlet Ibis..

    ReplyDelete
  135. Great connections, everyone. Angie, that's great. Put all those good ideas on the chart on pp. 51 too. We'll talk about them tomorrow. Who can answer Aaron;s and Megan's questions?
Earl, I'm not sure about probably early elementary school.

    ReplyDelete
  136. On page 51, it mentions a gum tree, does this kind of tree produce chickle- the base of chewing gum?

    ReplyDelete
  137. The older brother must feel so much guilt because of everything that happened with Doodle.

    ReplyDelete
  138. I thought that Doodle was going to die. It's because the brother worked him way to hard for his body to control.

    ReplyDelete
  139. He relized Doodle ment a lot more to him than he thought

    ReplyDelete
  140. Why would the Brother leave doodle laying in the middle of the road while rain is pouring down, and then go back when he sees that Doodle hasn't gotten up yet? Why go back?

    ReplyDelete
  141. Poor Doodle. Why would the brother leave Doodle behind?

    ReplyDelete
  142. i have made a connection to the movie simon birch, i think that these two are the same in many ways.

    ReplyDelete
  143. I have made a connection the family doesnt want to let doodle die much lie in that dog movie with Owen Wilson And Jennifer Aniston you know the one where the dog is crazy but they learn to love it. At the end of the day people can let stuff go but if you truly love something you have to let it go thats a spongebob reference the one where he gets the sea horse

    ReplyDelete
  144. scott, i do beleive the movie you are referring to is marley and me, but i do think that there are some nickelodean referances in this story

    ReplyDelete
